Assessing Your Evacuation Plan – Applying Best Practices and Lessons Learned
David Hood, Senior Advisor/Technical Fellow, Jesnen Hughes
While the full-building evacuation of a long-term care facility is rare, disasters such as floods, wildfires, and hurricanes have led to an increasing number of evacuations in recent years. This program will outline evacuation planning best practices and analyze the lessons learned during recent evacuations. Challenges including resident tracking, accessing transportation, and identifying resident placement options will be discussed. A tabletop exercise will be conducted where concepts can be discussed and applied to a realistic evacuation scenario.
This tabletop is not only an educational session, but also a train the trainer session for how you can take the tabletop and facilitate it at your own facility with the materials you receive.
Learning Objectives
- Identify how to collaborate with other long-term care facilities to support operations during a disaster.
- Implement a comprehensive evacuation triage and tracking process.
- Implement procedures to access electronic medical records during an evacuation.
- Determine types and quantities of evacuation equipment that should be available for use in an emergency.
