The elements of a successful recovery program are the same as a program of wellness and prevention. A recovery program for nurses is described and applied to principles of maintaining wellness and prevention of disease. Identification of treatment resources specifically focused on the needs of recovering health professionals. The highly regarded Prochaska and DeClemente Stages of Change Model of Recovery is presented to illustrate the potential for healing in recovery. The concept developed by Alex Brumbaugh of stages of successful recovery attached to specific understandings like, “I deserve to forgive myself,” are illustrated. Finally, the concept of the ‘wounded healer’ is offered, and the steps to a return to nursing practice is described.
