De-escalation Techniques for Healthcare Settings
Training those who work in long-term care, especially these days when they are expected to wear so many hats, can be a challenge. Now more than ever, though, employees need specialized education on how to safely de-escalate and navigate through situations that involve aggression and confrontation with residents, guests, and even other employees. In this session, we define the term “de-escalation” and look at the emotional, behavioral, and cognitive warning signs that a person may become aggressive. The session also includes a discussion on the elements of de-escalation, and how it can take place in a healthcare setting.
Responding to Aggressive Behaviors in Dementia Care
In middle and late stages of dementia, an individual may begin to exhibit angry or aggressive behaviors, a change which can be distressing for caregivers who are unprepared and untrained in how to respond when these behaviors occur. In this session, attendees will review how the brain changes of dementia contribute to unusual and even aggressive behaviors in residents. They will identify potential triggers of aggression in the long-term care setting, as well as best practices for responding to aggressive behaviors of those with living with dementia.
