This webinar will satisfy the RN continuing education requirement on abuse and exploitation.
This one-hour webinar will help the attendee recognize the signs of elder abuse and exploitation summed up as five (5) different categories of abuse known as (1) Neglect; (2) Exploitation; (3) Physical; (4) Emotional; and (5) Sexual with an emphasis on financial exploitation for this block. The material will reinforce the student’s knowledge of the different types of elder abuse and provide steps to detect and prevent such abuse. This course will also provide valuable resources in the event of an investigation resulting in any prosecution locally or federally that will assist the victims.
Learning Objectives At the end of this session, attendees will be able to:
- Define Elder Abuse.
- Identify specific indicators of crimes against the elderly.
- Understand the importance of documentation and reporting to increase the chances of a successful prosecution (if necessary), and a safe outcome for the victim.
- Recognize risk factors and utilize intervention techniques for potential victims, to include making referrals to other agencies for assistance.
- Understand the emotional and legal impact of the crime on the victim and the victim’s family.
- Access available resources.

SCOTT DUFFEY, FBI SSRA (ret)
Criminal Justice Institute, Wilmington University
Scott Duffey, FBI SSRA (ret), is currently one of the Directors of the Criminal Justice Institute of Wilmington University. Prior to Wilmington University, he was a special agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Wilmington, Delaware Resident Agency of the Baltimore Field Division. He served 22 years working complex criminal investigations before his promotion as a supervisory senior resident agent. Prior to his service in the FBI, Mr. Duffey was a Pennsylvania police officer for 5 1/2 years. Throughout his FBI career Mr. Duffey traveled the United States and parts of the world as an adjunct instructor with the FBI in the field of interview and interrogation. He also is an adjunct instructor in the Criminal Justice Programs for Wilmington University as well as a certified instructor for the Municipal Police Officers’ Education and Training Commission in Pennsylvania.
